The Benefits of Magnesium Aluminum Alloy Laptop Chassis

Laptops

A thin and light yet robust chassis is a foundational feature that all laptop owners hope for with a laptop purchase. Now, with the advancements in metallurgy, this has become an achievable reality.

The new MSI Prestige 13 Evo, Stealth 14 Studio, and Stealth 16 Studio use Magnesium Aluminum (MgAl) as the material of their chassis for reduced weight and better rigidity, with the added benefit of being fingerprint-proof - but more on this later.

The Prestige 13 Evo has raised the bar for thin and light laptop market, weighing at less than 1kg. And thanks to the MgAl chassis and the MSIs engineering efforts, the overall weight of these laptops have been significantly reduced. Not to mention the high-performance gaming laptop: Stealth 14 Studio and Stealth 16 Studio, only weighing 1.7 and 1.99 kg.

So, how has MSI achieved significant weight reduction in the new gen laptop chassis' using this special MgAl material? Well, by utilising the aero-industrial level alloy - AZ91D, a mix of two metals: Magnesium and Aluminum - commonly used in auto and aero industries, MSI have been able to adopt the light yet strong characteristic that this material is known for.

Thin and Light:

The density of aluminum is 2.7 g/cm³, whereas the density of AZ91D MgAl is 1.81 g/cm³. To put this into perspective, if both materials were used to make the same chassis design, the one made by MgAl will be 33% lighter!

Stronger Tensile Strength:

To truly understand the strength of a MgAl chassis you must also understand its tensile strength. This is the maximum load that a material can support without fracturing when being stretched, this is then divided by the original cross-sectional area of the material to give you the value of the tensile strength. The MgAl has the tensile strength of 230 MPa compared to the pure aluminum material that has only 90 MPa. Meaning, the MgAl is 155% stronger than aluminum.

Fingerprint-proof:

Along with its great durability and lightness, the MgAl chassis of Prestige 13 Evo, Stealth 14 Studio, and Stealth 16 Studio provides a premium matte finish that not only adds to the luxury aesthetic of the laptop, but also prevents stains and fingerprints marking the chassis, that usually occurs with everyday use.
