The Best Value Graphics Card for Black Myth: Wukong – RTX 4070 SUPER

Graphics Cards

Black Myth: Wukong finally launched to rave reviews on August 20, 2024, a good 4 years after it was first teased in 2020. It has lived up to all the anticipation with a whopping $2.2 million concurrent players on Steam on release day and 10 million copies sold in just 3 days!

The story of Black Myth: Wukong follows the Destined One, an anthropomorphic monkey, as he sets out on a quest to gather lost relics connected to a legend.

In addition to a gripping plot and an interesting storyline that’ll keep you hooked for hours, the game also boasts some truly gorgeous artwork and graphics. You’ll also see detailed cultural and natural landmarks from the real world in the game, including several locations from the Shanxi Province of China.

Of course, graphics like these tend to take a toll on hardware and you might be wondering whether your PC can handle Black Myth: Wukong or whether it’s time for an upgrade. Well, let’s find out what it takes to enjoy this journey to its full potential!

For a fast-paced Action RPG like Black Myth: Wukong, you’ll need at least an average of 60 FPS for a pleasant gaming experience. Features like DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and DLSS Frame Generation will come in handy to maintain playable framerates, especially on less powerful GPUs.

Our tests were conducted with Ray Tracing set to medium, DLSS ON, and Frame Generation ON. Unfortunately, setting Ray Tracing higher than medium or turning upscaling (DLSS) OFF impacts performance quite a bit, even with mid-range graphics cards.

While Black Myth: Wukong is a fantastic-looking game with path-traced ray tracing and deserves to be savored at the highest quality settings, you’ll have to trade higher quality with lower FPS numbers unless you’re running top-tier, current-gen GPUs.

That said, the game looks stunning even at medium quality, which means you can play around with your settings to get to playable framerates on most graphics cards without completely wrecking your experience.

Black Myth: Wukong 1080p Benchmarks (DLSS ON; Frame Generation ON; MEDIUM Ray Tracing)

At 1080p, it looks like you’ll need at least an RTX 4060 to maintain an average FPS of 66. However, the performance takes off (~25% improvement) if you hop up to the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, presumably because of the additional VRAM.

Standing in as our last-gen contender, the RTX 3080 puts up a decent showing – delivering an average FPS of 74.

But if you want higher frame rates to leverage high refresh rates, an RTX 4070 SUPER is the way to go. It should allow you to breeze through the game with triple-digit FPS numbers even in demanding scenes.

Black Myth: Wukong 1440p Benchmarks (DLSS ON; Frame Generation ON; MEDIUM Ray Tracing)

At 1440p, the game starts to demand quite a bit from your GPU, especially in the VRAM department. As you can see, hopping to an RTX 4060 Ti 16GB Graphics Card nets us a sizeable uplift over the RTX 4060 – getting us to a very nice average FPS of 69.

An RTX 4070 SUPER or better is the right pick for a more fluid gaming experience at this resolution, with the former delivering excellent value.

The once-mighty RTX 3080 is now sadly struggling to keep its head above the 60 FPS water with an average FPS of just 58, which means that older, weaker cards will struggle to handle Black Myth: Wukong at anywhere close to these settings and resolution.

Stepping up to 4K in a modern game is a great way to bring most graphics cards to their knees. But we’re hoping that some DLSS and Frame Generation magic on the 40-series can get us into playable territory within the mid-range GPU lineup.

Thankfully, the RTX 4070 SUPER has more than enough juice to get us comfortably past the 60 FPS mark, with a healthy average FPS of 73. Of course, you’ll need to grab something more powerful like an RTX 4080 SUPER or RTX 4090 to touch triple-digit FPS numbers at 4K.

The Best Value Graphics Card for Black Myth: Wukong – RTX 4070 SUPER

In our benchmarks, the RTX 4070 SUPER stands out as the best bang-for-buck product for Black Myth: Wukong, unless you’re gaming at 4K. Although it can hold up even at 4K, you should opt for an RTX 4070 Ti SUPER or an RTX 4080 SUPER for a more premium experience.

As for last-gen graphics cards, the RTX 3080 is still solid at 1080p. However, if you want to play at higher resolutions like 1440p or 1080p, there are only two options: spring for an upgrade or turn down a few graphics settings.

If you have 70 or 60-class cards from previous generations (RTX 2060, 3060, etc.), they just can’t hit high frame rates at higher resolutions (1440p and above) unless you sacrifice quite a bit of visual fidelity.
