From a design and manufacturing perspective, cooling top-tier graphics cards is challenging. High heat output needs to be controlled within a small space, which then introduces more challenges such as fan noise. For MSI, air or liquid cooling options are feasible and both thermal solutions have their advantages and disadvantages.

In this article, we’ll cover why liquid cooling can be a more potent thermal design for top-tier graphics cards like the newly launched MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X 24G Graphics Card. Is it the right choice for gamers and professionals who want the absolute best? Well, let’s find out!
Why a Liquid AIO? Feat. MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X 24G
Liquid cooling offers several advantages and there are four key upsides with a closed-loop liquid-cooled RTX 4090: sustained performance, reduced noise, ease of use, and high heat dissipation.

Sustained Performance
Liquid cooling helps maintain peak performance for longer, making it the solution of choice for performance enthusiasts. NVIDIA GPUs have intelligent boost algorithms that monitor temperatures and boost core clocks whenever sufficient thermal headroom is available. An overbuilt cooling solution allows the graphics card to maintain higher peak clocks for longer.

We turned to a hybrid air-liquid cooling solution to ensure that the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X 24G can handle even extreme overclocks without breaking a sweat, while offering great headroom under typical operation. In fact, MSI has already tested and broken our own clock speed records repeatedly in the lab!
Reduced Noise Levels
Thanks to the hybrid cooling design of MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X 24G, efficient heat dissipation allows for lower noise levels even under high-performance loads. The graphics card shroud features a TORX FAN 5.0, a low-profile pump, and a copper contact plate for liquid cooling. The pump connects to a radiator equipped with two MEG Silent Gale P12 Fans for optimal, yet quiet, cooling.

Lower Temperatures
Although air-cooled RTX 4090 graphics cards from MSI are favorites among gamers around the world, they run at higher temperatures when under load compared to liquid cooled cards. This is because air-cooled cards can’t release their heat as fast as a liquid-cooled card.
If you’re on the hunt for a top-tier premium RTX 4090 that runs cooler and quieter, the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X 24G is the way to go.
Quick and Easy Installation and Maintenance
In the past, enjoying the benefits of water cooling came at the cost of valuable time and effort. While custom water loops have their advantages, they can be complex to assemble, especially for a first time modder.
A closed-loop All-in-One (AIO) liquid cooler allows enthusiasts to enjoy the benefits of water cooling without the difficulty of custom loops.
We have provided a step-by-step installation guide for our MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X 24G that shows you how easy it is to add a water-cooled graphics card to your high-end Gaming PC:
- Carefully prop the radiator portion of your graphics card against your case so you can pick up the graphics card to install it without difficulty.
- Install the graphics card portion of the SUPRIM LIQUID X into your primary PCIe slot, as shown below (it’s usually the one closest to the CPU). You’ll hear a click when the plastic latch at the end of your motherboard slot locks your graphics card into place.
- Next, use your case screws to lock the graphics card’s metal retention bracket to the back of your case.
- Prepare to install the radiator. Mount using screws through case screw holes and into the radiator.

- The fans should be facing in an exhaust orientation, i.e., they should be pushing air out of the case through the radiator. To get the orientation right, you should install your radiator fan with its grille facing the radiator, as shown below.

- That’s it! Your liquid-cooled RTX 4090 is installed and ready to go!
* The installation of liquid-cooled graphics cards may vary according to your PC case, depending on its design and layout. For optimal airflow, we recommend looking into the configuration of your PC case while placing the radiator.

That’s a Wrap
The MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X 24G is designed for those who want the best.
